چکیده

Abstract Background Encephaloceles are cystic congenital malformations in which central nervous system (CNS) structures, communication with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pathways, herniate through a defect the cranium. Hydrocephalus occurs 60–90% of patients occipital encephaloceles. Objective Assessment surgical management hydrocephalus associated encephalocele and its effect on clinical outcome. Methods Between October 2015 2019, retrospective study was conducted seventeen children encephaloceles who were operated upon. The presence progressive determined by an abnormal increase head circumference ventricular size imaging studies. A ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt applied had hydrocephalus. outcome graded according to developmental milestones outpatient follow-up visits. Results mean age at surgery 1.6 (range, 0–15) months. There ten girls (58.8%) seven boys (41.2%). Ten contained neural tissue. cranial anomalies. Eleven (64.7%) hydrocephalus: four them (36.4%) diagnosed preoperatively, while (63.6%) developed postoperatively. (90.9%) managed VP shunt. All some degree delay, including six (54.5%) mild/moderate delay five (45.5%) severe delay. Half (50%) without normal neurological during period ( p value= 0.034). Conclusions Occipital is often complicated resulted worse encephalocele, so it can help guide prenatal neonatal counseling.

Cardiofaciocutaneous Syndrome With Occipital Encephalocele

Cardiofaciocutaneous (CFC) syndrome is a rare multiple congenital anomalies/mental retardation (MCA/MR) syndrome characterized by growth failure, distinctive facial appearance, ectodermal abnormalities, and congenital heart defects1. Around 100 cases have been reported in literature to date. We describe here a child with features of cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome. Parental consanguinity and occi...

A Giant Occipital Encephalocele

Giant occipital encephaloceles are rare lesions. Because of their enormous size they pose a surgical challenge. Herein we report a four months old female baby who presented with progressively increasing swelling over the occipital region. This swelling was present since birth. Surgery was planned to reduce the size of the swelling as well as its contents. The redundant sac was excised and reduc...

Occipital condyle fractures: clinical decision rule and surgical management.

OBJECT Occipital condyle fractures (OCFs) are rare injuries and their treatment remains controversial. Several classification systems have been proposed, first by Anderson and Montesano and more recently by Tuli and colleagues and Hanson and associates, who sought to stratify these fractures in a manner that would guide treatment that has typically ranged from semirigid collar immobilization to...

Supra- and infra-torcular double occipital encephalocele.

An encephalocele is a protrusion of the brain and/or meninges through a defect in the skull that is closed or covered with skin. Occipital encephaloceles are the most frequent type in North America and Western Europe, where about 85% of encephaloceles take this form. To the best of our knowledge, there are only three other reported cases of double occipital encephaloceles in the literature. The...

Complications Associated with Surgical Treatment of Hydrocephalus

Excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain is a condition known as hydrocephalus. It may cause a life-threatening increase in intracranial pressure (ICP). Nonsurgical treatment of hydrocephalus includes continuous CSF drainage, repetitive lumbar punctures (Lim et al., 2009), or osmotic diuretics such as mannitol or glycerol, but their effects are transient and limited. Sur...
